Amie Hwang, PhD, MPH
Director, Master of Public Health Program
Assistant Professor of Clinical Population and Public Health Sciences

A Welcome Message from Dr. Hwang

Welcome to the USC public health community. Whether you’re just starting your journey or returning to continue your studies, this is a community to learn and grow together.

Public health is one of the most powerful ways to create real, lasting change locally and globally. It’s about improving lives—sometimes in big, visible ways, and often in quieter, behind-the-scenes work that helps entire communities thrive. The challenges are real, but so is the impact.

USC’s MPH Program equips students not just with facts and figures, but with a way of seeing the world—critically, compassionately and with a systems-level understanding of how health is shaped by biology, behavior, environment and society. This program is more than just coursework. It’s a space to grow, to ask hard questions, and to connect with others who care deeply about making a difference. You’ll learn from faculty who are not only experts in their fields, but who care deeply about your development. You’ll be encouraged to think critically, act ethically and lead with empathy. You’ll be part of a vibrant, diverse student community where peer-to-peer learning is as valuable as classroom instruction.

Take advantage of every opportunity—inside the classroom and out. Collaborate, volunteer, explore research and lean on each other. The field of public health thrives on collaboration, and the connections you build here will carry you far.

Welcome—we are excited to support you on this journey and look forward to the impact you will make.

Warm regards,
Amie E. Hwang

Meet Dr. Hwang

Dr. Hwang has been serving as the Director of the Master of Public Health program at the University of Southern California since January 1, 2022. Dr. Hwang has a passion for teaching and public health and is devoted to the department’s education programs. Prior to becoming the director, she served as a director and faculty advisor for the MPH Biostatistics-Epidemiology concentration.

She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science at the University of California, Davis and spent five postgraduate years at the Western Human Nutrition Research Center, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Then, she earned her MPH and PhD from USC, and she completed her postdoctoral training in cancer epidemiology at the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at USC.

As an alumnus of the USC MPH program, Dr. Hwang attributes her passion for public health and her academic pursuit in epidemiology to the valuable training at the USC MPH program. Dr. Hwang is a cancer epidemiologist with a research focus on utilizing innovative, population-based strategies to address the burden of cancer among young people. She is a rising leader actively involved in multiple national initiatives on pediatric cancer research.

Meet Dr. Choudhury

Farzana Choudhury, PhD, MBBS
Associate Director, Master of Public Health Program
Associate Professor of Clinical Population and Public Health Sciences

Dr. Farzana Choudhury has been serving as the Associate Director of the Master of Public Health program since August 2023. Before that she was the concentration director of the Biostatistics & Epidemiology track.

Dr. Choudhury is a physical-epidemiologist and a USC alumna. Born and raised in Bangladesh, she obtained her medical degree there. She veered towards public health as she realized the importance and relevance of preventive medicine while serving in remote, resource-constrained areas. She obtained her MPH in Bangladesh.  After relocating to the USA, she earned an MS (Applied Biostatistics & Epidemiology) and a PhD (Epidemiology) at USC. She joined the USC Eye Institute as a faculty in 2015 and Department of Population and Public Health Sciences in 2018.

Although Dr. Choudhury is active in research and administration, she believes that at her core she has always been, and always will be, a teacher passionate about helping her students connect the dots, so the information they receive becomes the knowledge they can retain and prudently apply. Dr. Choudhury teaches multiple core courses in Biostatistics within the department. Her primary research interests include ocular epidemiology with a specific interest in the epidemiology of retinal disorder.
